This is a Matt Uelmen FAN SITE!

Matt Uelmen is a dark ambient musician based in Los Angeles, California. He is best known for his work on various computer games for Blizzard Entertainment from 1996 to 2007. He is currently employed at the Runic Games, where he is believed to be working on the music for “Torchlight”. Among his best known work is “Into Town” (often mistakenly called “Tristram”, which is a later piece for “Diablo II”), a piece created as atmospheric music for the town of Tristram from the 1997 game “Diablo”.

Matt was born in July 31, 1973 in the South Bay area of greater Los Angeles. Almost all of his formal training in music came through piano lessons from Lenée Bilski from the ages of 6 to 13, which were discontinued when his family moved to San Jose, California during his high school years. Matt is largely self-taught as a multi-instrumentalist and orchestrator, with a familiarity with instruments in the keyboard, guitar, flute and percussion families. Most of his performance experience is on the keyboard, though the piece most associated with him, “Tristram” or “Towne” from the Diablo series of computer games, features his playing on 12-string guitar and flute.

This series of games was the core creation of his employer, Condor Inc (later renamed Blizzard North), where he worked for 11 years. This series is estimated to have collectively sold over twenty million copies and, more remarkably, was still on the shelves at major retailers over a decade after the release of the original “Diablo” and seven years after the release of the final installation in the series, “Diablo II: Lord of Destruction”.

Dude – I have been fascinated by your music – and in particular Diablo Town for years. I just learned that you were the creator of the piece. It’s excellent not only technically speaking, but also because it conjures the image of dark fantasy perfectly. You rock!

    Best,
    Nick

Hi Matt, I hope you had a great new year. I have been a serious fan of your music throughout the Diablo series for well over 10x years of playtime. In fact, I love the music so much that when I finally retired from the Diablo Universe, some of the darkness followed and I went on a journey performing your score and the various “Diablo Acts” as a one man terror, live throughout Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH — which I have refereed to in my MALS graduate thesis simple as “Tristam”. The character I role play has been dubbed “The Sun God” by students. In lore, I believe Baal is also known as a Sun God – how fitting! There is so much to say, but in short, I just wanted to say thank you for creating such wonderful sounds and helping me to express myself.

    sincerely,
    JJR

By tristam, I of course meant to say: “Tristram” : )

cheers! and again — great music!!!

  8. I love the Diablo II soundtrack so much. Once I beat it I will make a point of playing some other games you’ve written the soundtrack for just to hear it.

Lut Gholein and Tristram and beautiful. So is the login screen for Battle.net at some parts (did you write that too? I don’t know its name)

Excellent work. I’d love to hear some full albums of your style of music.

Your diablo compositions are a regular part of my listening rotation, among other soundtracks (Skyrim, Oblivion, Assassin’s Creed, Tomb Raider, Bastion, Halo and others). I love that you’re still at it, in 2017. “Hob”, correct? I’ve also just discovered your work in World of Warcraft. I’ve never played WoW, so I missed your work in that. Keep at it! – p.s. – You should collaborate with Jeremy Soule. Such a duo could create genius together.
